White Brick Wall

Ortaire de Coupigny’s Monsignore is a witty fusion of wordplay and visual intrigue, where a shrimp-like figure extends its claw in a striking pose. Encased in wax and pigments, its vibrant deep red and purple hues contrast against the pale aquatic background, giving the impression of a moment suspended in time. The crustacean’s gaze, sharp and focused, adds an element of curiosity—what is it reaching for, or perhaps grasping?

The title, Monsignore, cleverly plays on the French phrase "pince-monseigneur," a colloquial term for a crowbar, a tool used to pry things open. This subtle humor adds an extra dimension: is the shrimp a dignified, almost ceremonial figure, or is it about to break into something unexpected? The bright red and yellow tin, with its decorative fish branding, reinforces Coupigny’s characteristic juxtaposition of industrial packaging and artistic transformation, turning an everyday object into a scene of playful mystery.

The partially unsealed lid, a signature element in Coupigny’s compositions, suggests movement—something between preservation and escape, containment and expansion. The layer of wax, softening the edges of the shrimp’s form, mimics the effect of water or glass, blurring reality and abstraction while enhancing the piece’s depth and tactility.

For collectors drawn to conceptual mixed-media artworks, Monsignore highlights Coupigny’s talent for blending humor, craftsmanship, and poetic ambiguity. With its smart interplay of language, materiality, and unexpected imagery, it stands as both a visual puzzle and a testament to the artist’s inventive approach.
